William Martin Leake

Statut : Topographer; numismatist.

1777-1860

Notes : Universally known as Colonel Leake. His service in the army led him to travel extensively in Anatolia, Cyprus, the Holy Land, Egypt, Syria, and especially Greece. He published nine books and 33 articles, most of them concerned with the topography of ancient Greece. In 1838 he married Elizabeth Wray, daughter of one orientalist (Sir Charles Wilkins) and widow of another (William Marsden). 10-2010 VC.
