Anna Sergeevna Miljukova

Notes : Anna Sergevna Miljukova was one of eight children of Sergei K. Smirnov, rector of the theological seminary at the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius, near Moscow. When her parents refused to consider further education, she decided to support herself by giving piano lessons while attending the Ger’e higher courses for women (an alternative to higher education before women were admitted to universities in Russia). She met her future husband, the famous Russian historian and politician Paul Miljukov (founding member of the Constitutional Democratic ‘Kadet’ party, and Minister of Forein Affairs in the First Provisional Government), through her mentor and director of studies, the historian Vasilii Klyuchevskii. The Miljukovs emigrated following the Bolshevik coup and lived in Paris from 1920. For a biographical sketch, see A. Zhikareva, “Anna S. Milyukova: zhiznennyi put’”, Poslednie novosti April 5 and April 8, 1935.
