Sarah Austin

Statut : Translator and writer.

1793-1867

Notes : Sarah Taylor was born to a lively intellectual family prominent in the Unitarian community in Norwich. In 1819 she married the legal scholar John Austin, but the marriage was to be a deeply unhappy one due to the contrast between Sarah's ebullient and enterprising personality and her husband's depressive tendencies. John, though brilliant, was remarkably unsuccessful in his career, forcing Sarah to take responsibility for supporting the family. She wrote works of her own but mostly translated those of others, since this commanded higher fees and allowed her to avoid overshadowing her husband. She was well recognized as a remarkably accomplished and prolific translator. 10-2010 VC.
