Alexander Allen

Notes : Philologist and classical scholar. He studied at University College London and at the University of Leipzig. He published an 'Etymological Analysis of Latin Verbs' (1836), an 'Essay on Teaching Greek (Papers of the Central Society of Education, vol. 1), 'Constructive Greek Exercises, for Teaching Greek from the Beginning by Writing' (1839); several more works on Latin and Greek, 'A New English Grammar (1841), and essays on writing Latin and Greek exercises and on parsing in the Journal of Education. He also contributed articles to the Penny Cyclopaedia and Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities and Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology. He died of pneumonia.
